Project Overview.

Helix was tasked with capturing the energy and intensity of the Les Mills fitness event in London, delivering a 360-degree virtual reality experience that would be further transformed into an engaging augmented reality (AR) app. The goal was to transport users right into the heart of the event, allowing them to relive the dynamic workouts from the comfort of their own devices. By pushing the boundaries of immersive media, this project offers users an unprecedented level of interactivity, turning the weekend’s live exercises into a virtual journey that can be explored on their phones.

Production Process.

Pre-Production:

  • Detailed site planning to determine optimal camera and sound placement for full event coverage.
  • Coordination with the Les Mills team to capture key exercises and moments.

Production:

  • Utilized 1 Insta360 Titan, 4 Insta360 Pro II cameras, and 4 surround sound audio devices to capture the weekend event in full 360-degree detail.
  • One of the standout techniques involved flying the 360 cameras high above the crowd using a crane, capturing breathtaking aerial views of the event. This provided a unique perspective, allowing users to feel fully immersed in the scale and energy of the workout sessions.
  • Crew members participated live in the exercises to capture an authentic, first-person experience that brings the audience right into the workout.
  • Managed challenges including coordinating multiple camera setups in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.

Post-Production:

  • Stitched high-definition footage from multiple cameras to create a seamless 360° video experience.
  • Integrated spatial audio to enhance the immersive nature of the VR/AR experience.
  • Developed AR capabilities to allow users to launch the experience on their phones, with interactive features bringing the workout to life.

Installation Details.

The resulting AR app allows users to experience the Les Mills event from various angles, all while immersed in real-time soundscapes and dynamic visuals. The app creates a unique fusion of fitness and technology, offering users a new way to engage with Les Mills’ world-class fitness routines.

The Les Mills VR/AR app successfully met its objectives, blending innovative 360-degree footage and AR technology to provide users with an immersive fitness experience.
